I've been going by the nickname of LJ since 1992. I didn't have any woodcrafting or home repair skills as a youngster. My first go at anything came as a teen when I had to convert a storage room in the basement of my parent's house into my bedroom.  With their assistance, I painted the walls, laid wall-to-wall carpet, installed a decent ceiling lamp. I also salvaged a broken TV set with a foldout turntable. I gutted it and made a bookcase out of it.

I really got going on learning how to do things when my wife and I bought our first house in 1980, two years after being married. It was almost a 'fixer upper'. The kitchen and bath needed professional work, for sure. Our real estate agent presented me with this book saying that I would need to acquire many DIY skills as this house would need more work than I could afford to pay a

pro. This book would be a big assistance in learning the skills and techniques. The basement and above ground pool could be done by a DIYer. Lo and behold!

That is what really got me started. And 40 years later I still have that book.
