Exterior Door Refurbish

Door Window Frame1.JPG

The door was 16+ years old and the plastic moulding that holds the pane of “glass” in the door gave up the ghost. Time to put on my DIY cap and make my own moulding.

I carefully measured the thickness of the door, subtracted out the thickness of the glass and divided by 2. That was how deep the rabbet needed to be cut. I had to take care not to have the moulding rise too high above the door else it would interfere with using the door handle; note that it is not a knob.

I used cedar for this project.

I added a little bit of class as best I could given that I did not have much thickess of wood with which to work.

I drilled pocket holes to recess the screws. A little caulking to hold the moulding in place and then I used screws on the inside piece to bite into the back of the outside piece. That was the mounting technique of the manufacturer.

The wood color matches in natural lighting. The color just looks a bit different in these pic, that’s all.
